SVOP - Small Vessel Operator Proficiency

This is a TC approved course for small vessel captains and crew. It covers minimum training for owners and operators of commercial vessels: Workboats and passenger vessels up to 5 GT (up to 8.5 meters in length), and fishing vessels of up to 15 GT (up to 12 meters in length), engaged on a Sheltered Waters or Near Coastal class 2 voyages (up to 25 Nautical Miles from shore).

Description

This is a TC approved course for small vessel captains and crew.

It covers minimum training for owners and operators of small commercial vessels, specifically:

Workboats and passenger vessels up to 5 GT (~8.5 meters),

and fishing vessels of up to 15 GT (~12 meters),

Operating in Canadian waters on a Near Coastal class 2 or a sheltered waters voyage (within 25 nautical miles of shore).

Goals
To provide:
a) A basic understanding of the hazards of the marine environment and the prevention of shipboard incidents;
b) The knowledge and skills to safely operate a small non-pleasure vessel in near coastal and sheltered waters under normal operating 
conditions.
c) Additional knowledge on aids to navigation

In this fun 4-Day Online-Based course we will cover theory on:

  • Collision Regulations and Watchkeeping
  • Buoyage and Navigation
  • Chartwork, Magnetic Compass, GPS, Radar
  • Vessel Stability
  • Vessel Types and Construction Terminology
  • Mechanics and Propulsion Systems
  • Docking, Landing, and Maneuvering Theory
  • Marine Weather and Forecasting
  • Knot Tying, splicing, and Seamanship skills
  • Departure Preparations, Checklists, and Safety

Hands-on Practical Portions:

  • Knot tying & Seamanship
  • Chartwork & Plotting

We will be doing a hands-on chartwork and course plotting exercise, we ill provide chartwork tools for use in class. If you would like your own set, we sell high-quality Weems & Plath navigation equipment which you can keep for use throughout your career.

Duration: 26 hours given over 4 days. As per TC requirements, full attendance is mandatory and you can not miss more than 10% (2.6 hours) of course time to receive Certificate .

SVMO - Small Vessel Machinery Operator

Safer Ocean Systems does not offer SVMO courses. However, one of our instructors offers private tutoring and exam preparation. Many commercial vessels under 500GT are required to carry an SVMO ticket holder.
