SDV-BS (formerly MED A3) This is an ONLINE Marine Emergency Duties boating safety course. Description
This is an ONLINE Marine Emergency Duties boating safety course. It is the minimum training requirement for masters and crew on small non-pleasure (commercial) vessels. In this intense 1-Day online course we will talk about the different kinds of emergencies we may face while working on the water, and what we have to do to keep our crew, passengers, and ourselves safe. There is a mandatory practical component to this online course that must be completed within 10 days of course completion.
This ticket applies to Owners, Operators and Crew, on:

Commercial Vessels of 24 meters or less, engaged on a sheltered water voyage only;

Commercial Vessels of 18 meters or less engaged on a voyage in domestic waters; and,
-
Commercial Fishing vessels of 24 meters or less engaged on a voyage in domestic waters.
We will cover theory on:
- Types of Emergencies
- Emergency Response, such as Man Overboard, Flooding, Medical, and more,
- Life Rafts, Survival Suits, and other Lifesaving Appliances
- Marine Fire Fighting
- Hypothermia and cold-water immersion
- Distress Signals, GMDSS, VHF Radio, EPIRBs, and SARTs
- The Coast Guard and other rescue resources

**Please note that due to updates in the Transport Canada-required exam software (Safe Exam Browser), there have been some technical issues with certain operating platforms. PC computers and laptops running Windows 10 are strongly recommended. Tablets and mobile devices are non-compliant for examination purposes. If you have any questions or issues about technical requirements, please contact our office.
Mandatory Practical Assessment Must be completed within 10 days of course completion: You may be required as part of your future marine career to be responsible for instructing passengers or crew on how to don and use lifejackets and immersion suits. Therefore, each candidate must demonstrate proper knowledge and ability.
This Practical Assessment is Mandatory and must be completed within 10 days, Please confirm that you can meet the requirements prior to booking.
Here are the options for fulfilling the practical assessment:
1. You book an appointment with your instructor and come to our Vancouver or Nanaimo Campus. We give you some of our sterile marine equipment and you demonstrate its correct use.
2. If you have access to a Life Jacket and an Immersion Suit (borrowed from a boat or a friend or maybe you just own the equipment). You get a friend to film you donning them correctly while wearing a blindfold and explaining the technique and then email us the video.
3. If you do not have access to this equipment and live too far away to come to Nanaimo or Vancouver, then without discussing and agreeing to an alternative with your instructor, we will not be able to issue a Certificate for this course.
Note: As per Transport Canada Requirements: The Practical Assessment MUST be completed as stated above within 10 days of your course, or you will not be issued a certificate.
Prerequisites
- Stable Internet Connection
- Desktop or Laptop Computer (Chromebooks, Tables and Phones are not accepted)
- A webcam w/ Microphone for Zoom Video-conferencing
- Access to an Approved Immersion Suit and Lifejacket (or the ability to attend a practical assessment in person - Nanaimo or Vancouver BC) Mandatory Practical Must be completed within 10 days of the course end date
- Minimum age requirement: 15 years
