MED STCW REF - Basic Safety
This refresher course is for MED STCW Basic Safety. It will renew the certificate and extend it for an additional 5 years.
Description
This course meets the requirements of TP 4957E and the requirements for Personal Survival Techniques, Basic Firefighting, and Personal Safety and Social Responsibility set out in Table A-VI/1-1, Table A-VI/1-2 and Table A-VI/1-4
Nanaimo Campus Participants: Live fire exercises will take place on Gabriola Island. Participants must arrange own travel.
Prerequisites
As of October 23rd, 2025 Transport Canada now advises seafarers that they must complete an online fatigue management course before enrolling in any Marine Emergency Duties Training. Information can be found here.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must complete the Fatigue Management at Sea training as per Transport Canada
- Have a valid TC Marine Medical Certificate or arrange in advance with us a Health and Fitness Waiver before the Firefighting component of the course.
- Must hold a valid STCW Basic Safety Training Certificate.
- Must have a cleanly shaven face for the firefighting portions of the course.
- It is a requirement that anyone with a Systolic Blood Pressure of 135 or higher get written permission from a doctor prior to participating.
Note: All participants will have their blood pressure tested before participating in fire scenarios.
